FLOWING WITH FAVOR FROM MY FATHER

Genesis 39:1-6

Rev. Dr. R.J. Lightsey II, D. Div.

August 2, 2009

Joseph’s Advancement – The key to Joseph’s whole life is expressed in the words: “and the Lord was with him…the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.”

Verse 2 – The Lord was with Joseph and even though he (Joseph) served under a master (Potiphar) he was still successful.

Verse 3 – Potiphar saw (realized) that someone greater (a greater master) was with Joseph and was causing him (Joseph) to be successful in everything he did. I can conclude that Joseph wanted to do more and more since he knew all he did would be a success. I can also conclude that Potiphar wanted him to do more and more because whatever Joseph did benefited Potiphar.

Verse 4 – Joseph found grace (obtained favor) while serving Potiphar, who made him overseer (caretaker/administrator) over all the possessions in his house.

Verse 5 – From the time Potiphar put Joseph in charge of his house his (Potiphar’s) possessions began to increase and multiply. Potiphar thought it was a good idea to make Joseph the administrator of his possessions in the field also – not just the house. Potiphar was no fool.

Verse 6 – Potiphar left all that he had in Joseph’s hand. He entrusted Joseph with everything. He knew he was rich but he didn’t know exactly what he had except for the food that he personally saw and ate. He completely trusted Joseph’s God to keep blessing him (Joseph) so that he (Potiphar) would continue to be blessed. He asked no questions. He just trusted. He knew Joseph was well-favored (highly-favored).
